Spend Saturday morning going on a hike and learning to shoot 35mm black and white film, then head on down to the Wheelhouse darkroom to develop and digitally scan your photos!
Workshop Overview
This is a 6-hour, small group introduction to 35mm black and white film photography, from loading a camera to developing and scanning your own photos. No prior film or photography experience needed.
Film photography works differently than shooting on a phone or digital camera: you can't check the back of the screen on the trail and every click of the shutter has a real cost. It forces you to slow down and think through your shots and brings a special quality to every image you don't typically get when shooting digitally.
Each attendee will leave with two rolls of developed negatives in archival storage sheets, digital scans of your photos if desired, and (hopefully) a renewed appreciation for photography!
Schedule
| 8:00 | Meet in town at a local coffeeshop to kick things off. We'll cover the basics of how to operate your camera and load film, concepts like the exposure triangle, and more. |
| 9:00 | Go for a hike! We'll pick from a handful of nearby hikes as a group and spend 1.5 to 2 hours out on the trail taking photos. |
| 11:00 | One hour break. |
| 12:00 | Regroup at the Wheelhouse in Ilium (10 minutes outside of downtown). Go through the basics of darkroom chemistry, how to load your film into a development tank, and then develop our film as a group. |
| 2:00 | Clean up and wrap up for the day. |
